AI Search Is The New Growth Channel

Marketing moved under our feet. After watching Marketing Against the Grain with Kipp Bodnar and Kieran Flanagan, my take is simple: Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the channel founders are sleeping on—and it’s already moving revenue. As someone who has built media, software, and communities for decades, I see a land grab hiding in plain sight.

Sam Parr said what many founders feel: AI is overwhelming. He’s not alone. But he walked away ready to act, and so did I. That energy matters because this shift is where buyers now ask questions, compare options, and decide.

AI search is different from Google search. You no longer fight for a blue-link click. You fight to be cited in the answer. And those answers drive action.

“We lost 140,000,000 visits in a year.” — Kipp Bodnar

That sounds grim—until you hear the rest:

“People who come to HubSpot from ChatGPT or Google Gemini become customers three to five times higher than the 10 blue link search.” — Kieran Flanagan

Traffic is down, but the right traffic is up. AI-guided buyers convert faster and better because the tool does the research with them.

What The Data Is Telling Us

The show put real numbers on the table:

  • ChatGPT ~900 million users; Gemini ~500 million.
  • Conversions from AI search are 3–5x higher than classic SEO traffic.
  • A single brand saw 3,000 AEO-focused pieces drive acquisition up fast.
  • Clicks undercount impact; impressions are often 100x the clicks.

These aren’t theory. They’re buyer behavior shifts happening now.

How AEO Actually Works

Visibility comes from citations across sources AI trusts. The hosts broke down what feeds the answers: PR, peer mentions, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn articles, and niche pages that answer very specific questions.

“In AI search… relevancy, for now, matters more than authority.” — Barry

That’s a gift to small teams. Relevance is a skill you can scale, even without a giant domain.

What I’d Do Now (And What I’m Doing)

As an operator and creator, here’s the playbook I’d run this quarter. It is simple, fast, and built for small teams.

  1. Map your buyer’s questions by intent: awareness, consideration, decision.
  2. Create niche content for each question: listicles, how-tos, product pages, and founder stories.
  3. Seed citations where AI looks: YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn articles, and relevant peer sites.
  4. Run a mini PR sprint: place 3–5 stories about customer outcomes.
  5. Track daily: which prompts mention you, where you rank, and which sources cite you.

Then add one lever at a time. Don’t boil the ocean. Win the next 10 citations that matter.

Why YouTube, Reddit, And Peers Matter

Google’s ecosystem leans hard on YouTube. OpenAI leans into Reddit. LinkedIn articles appear in both. That means you can engineer relevance by planting the right proof in the right places.

“Because YouTube is such a prevalent platform… your secret sauce could be in YouTube and video versus traditional text based content.” — Kipp Bodnar

Short version: make helpful videos that answer exact questions your buyers ask. Add transcripts. Title with the question. Link to a matching page. That creates a clean signal for AI to cite.

Addressing The Pushback

“But I can’t track it like ads.” True. You can track enough to act. Start with:

  • Daily prompt visibility (mentions and rank by question).
  • Call transcripts: count AI-assisted attributions.
  • Click-to-close time: AI-sourced leads should move faster.

Set a 90-day baseline. If mentions rise and cycles shorten, double down.

My Bottom Line

AEO isn’t a side project—it’s an amplifier for every channel you already use. If buyers consult AI before they buy, you belong inside that answer. That’s not optional.

Here’s my challenge to you:

  • Pick 25 buyer questions. Publish answers across web, YouTube, Reddit, and LinkedIn articles.
  • Secure five peer mentions and three PR hits that cite your product.
  • Measure mentions, not just clicks. Watch conversion speed.

You don’t need perfection. You need presence. The brands who show up in the answer win the sale. Start now, while relevance beats authority and speed beats size.

As someone who has watched waves reshape online business, I see this one clearly. The blue links era is fading. The answer era is here. Get cited—or get ignored.

Take one step today: list your buyer’s top questions and draft the first five answers. Publish in places AI trusts. Then repeat. Your future customers are already asking.
