The US's largest mobile operator AT&T and handset maker Samsung are launching the first mobile phone to support Napster's mobile music archive. The Samsung SGH-A747 SLM will sell from Nov 23 for USD150 and will allow users to sample tracks from its catalogue of more than 5m songs before buying them. Songs will cost USD1.99 each or USD7.49 for five per month. This is the same that Verizon Wireless charges for its music store, but double Sprint's rates, and double the price of most online PC music services including Napster, iTunes or Amazon's MP3 store, where tracks sell from USD0.79. However, AT&T argues that people will be willing to pay more for the convenience of the service. AT&T sells music on mobiles from eMusic and is already a partner of Napster, allowing the online music service's 750,000 subscribers to transfer music from their PCs to its mobile phones, using a cable or storage card. With the upcoming phone, however, people will be able to download and transfer music freely between their phones and PCs. Global spending on mobile music is expected to top USD32bn by 2010, according to a study by Gartner, released earlier this year. The UK boasts the highest penetration of 'music phones', with 40% of mobile phone owners having one, compared to 17% in the US according to M:Metrics. However, the US market was the fastest growing, increasing by 385% during 2006.
